Shannon Storms

User Experience Researcher/Designer

Perfect engineering is meaningless when unusable

Every design project begins the same way, product creation or product improvement. When a gap in the market has been identified, product creation aims to fill that gap. On the flip side, when a gap within a product has been identified, product improvement occurs to do the same. In both instances, users experience frustration trying to work around the problem with varying levels of success. This is where a UX Researcher’s job begins. It is up to the Researcher to identify solutions to the problem, create and test potential solutions, and deliver an end-product. Ideally, the end-product provides the user with the functionality and capability they desire while also considering the limitations and expectations of all stakeholders in the process. The three case studies provided are illustrative of the work completed at Northrop Grumman and they outline how the goals and job of a UX Researcher have been accomplished. The process, results, and outcomes are all based on real situations; however, the scenario, data, and application have all been adjusted to be publicly consumable. The following case studies will all be based on the same scenario described at the beginning of each study.

Introduction

  • End-to-End UX focusing on interview and A/B testing methodologies.

  • Business-to-Business with the primary focus of how UX decreased cost and time.

  • Business-to-Business focusing on how UX research is used to prevent future issues.
